QUICK SIMULATION OF A PERFORMABILITY MODEL W. Douglas Obal II

چکیده
We consider the problem of estimating via simulation the tails of the performability of a system. Traditional simulation is ine cient in this case because the number of samples required to obtain an adequate characterization of the tails is very large. The system we consider is the M/M/1/K system subject to server breakdowns and repairs. This system is simple, but has the characteristics shared by more complex systems, namely boundary conditions and multiple structural states. We propose a solution to this problem that combines results from large deviations theory and importance sampling. Speci cally, we use a large deviations analysis to derive an e ective strategy for importance sampling. Using this strategy, we obtain results that indicate a large improvement in simulation e ciency relative to the traditional approach.

A Multiprocessor System with Non-Preemptive Earliest-Deadline-First Scheduling Policy: A Performability Study
This paper introduces an analytical method for approximating the performability of a firm realtime system modeled by a multi-server queue. The service discipline in the queue is earliestdeadline- first (EDF), which is an optimal scheduling algorithm. Real-time jobs with exponentially distributed relative deadlines arrive according to a Poisson process. All jobs have deadlines until the end of s...

A large scale open source solution composed of several open source softwares is now attracting attention as the next-generation software development paradigm because of the cost reduction, quick delivery, and work saving. The testing phase of open source solution means the binding testing and system testing. Generally, it makes no sense to perform the unit testing of open source solution, becau...
متن کاملAn Environment for Importance Sampling Based on Stochastic Activity Networks
Model-based evaluation of reliable distributed and parallel systems is diicult due to the complexity of these systems and the nature of the dependability measures of interest. The complexity creates problems for analytical model solution techniques, and the fact that reliability and availability measures are based on rare events makes traditional simulation methods inee-cient. Importance sampli...
متن کاملRecurrence-Relation-Based Reward Model for Performability Evaluation of Embedded Systems
Many embedded systems behave as discrete-time semi-Markov processes (DTSMPs). For those systems, performability measures, especially when specified as an accumulated reward, are often difficult to evaluate analytically. In this article, we informally describe an approach that uses a recurrence-relation-based (RRB) reward model for performability evaluation of systems exhibiting DTSMP behavior. ...
